Hi, Lucy:

I work with an organization that is trying to maximize transparency (100 percent of contributions go directly from the business to the nonprofit) *and* move toward a more "core business-related philanthropy model."

Briefly: www.hotelsthathelp.org and (our parent organization www.kohalafoundation.org) does not ask a business to "add on" a cause. Rather, we embed the philanthropy in the daily "must do" actions that directly affect top-line/bottom-line business outcomes. For example, hotels must build trust with guests, and offer outstanding service. As part of being "of service," the hotel offers guests an opportunity to contribute $1 per might to local charity chosen by the hotel staff.

End of commercial.

Point being, instead of thinking of philanthropy as something added on by "corporate" (and often ignored by front line staff and distrusted by customers), we are looking for ways to embed philanthropy at the most local level into the daily "to do" tasks that are the basis of the business model.

Ken@hotelsthathelp.org

Hi Lucy!

Peace X Peace was created in 2003 to bring the voices of those most marginalized and affected by conflict--women--into peace processes. The internet is what makes that mission possible. Please check out www.peacexpeace.org and if I can be of any assistance, don't hesitate to contact me: molly@peacexpeace.org.

I'm interested to know the results of your survey!
Molly

Thanks Everyone for writing in. Mike - not sure if this is exactly what you are describing but check out CitizensMarket, the founder of which was just selected as an Echoing Green Fellow. http://www.citizensmarket.org/

As for the "kernel" analogy - I like it and it works, but not sure it will be well understood...Is there an adjective that describes the existence of this kernel?

Others have tweeted in with "entrenched" giving and "integrated" giving.

Such businesses might be said to have a "philanthropic kernel" analogous to the OS kernel, defined as "the part of the operating system that is mandatory and common to all other software." See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_(computing)

A key part of the giving conversation is the validation or vetting of giving choices. For many years such validation was the byproduct of the work of reporters and media distribution channels. With decline in reporting particularly at the regional and local levels, there is a fast growing gap. I just wrote a longer piece about this at http://growingsocialprofit.blogspot.com/

Best regards,

Kevin Johnson
